6 Ways to Make Money Blogging

1) Cost-Per-Click (CPC) Advertising Programs
CPC advertising programs are the best money making programs for most of the bloggers. They are suitable to all kind of blogs with family-friendly content regardless of their traffic level and age. CPC programs work well on blog because they display contextual ads that are highly relevant to blogs content and bloggers will earn anywhere between 10 cents to 50 cents for each contextual ads click by their visitors. With proper CPC ads optimization and consistent amount of traffic, a blogger can earn a steady amount of money displaying CPC ads on his/her blog. Google AdSense is no doubt, the undisputed king of CPC advertising programs and Yahoo Publisher Network is the closest alternative of AdSense.

2) Cost-Per-Action (CPA) Advertising Programs
CPA programs is quite similar to CPC programs except CPA programs don't pay bloggers for each click on the CPA ads hosted by bloggers. The blogger only makes money when the visitor takes an action on the CPA advertiser website. The action can be a sign up, making a purchase, generating a lead, downloading a product and more. CPA networks pay a lot more than CPC programs, for a visitor sent by the blogger from his/her blog to a CPA advertiser website and the visitor taken an action on the advertiser site, the blogger can earn few dollar to fifty dollar depend on the niche. But CPA ads tend to work well on large traffic blogs only. AzoogleAds.com, Commission Junction and Advertising.com are some of the largest CPA networks.

3) Promote Affiliate Programs
Marketing affiliate programs is very common nowadays. You sign up with affiliate program of an online company, then decide whether to use the company's text link or banner ads on your blog to promote the company's products or services and earn affiliate commission when a visitor make a purchase through your affiliate link. Affiliate programs can be promoted without a website and blog too.

4) Pay Per Post Programs
Pay per post programs started last year. The programs pay bloggers to write a blog post about a sponsor's website. The paid blog post can be a review or an introduction on the advertiser's website, products or services. The blogger will be paid a least $5 for each sponsor post. Blogs that have massive traffic, high Google PR and large number of subscribers can charge a few hundred dollar for just writing one sponsor post. Here's are the two most popular Pay per post networks that offer this type of earning opportunities:

www.reviewme.com
www.payperpost.com

The downside of pay per post is that writing too many sponsor posts that are not relevant to your blog content can seriously affect your traffic.

5) Sell Text Link Ads
Selling text links on your blog can be a great source of additional online revenue. It is not difficult to get started, just go to Text-link-ads.com to sign up an account, then decide which part of your pages you want to display paid text links, set your price and you are ready to take order. Text-link-ads.com will handle all the promotional works. Another company that offers the similar services as Text-link-ads.com is Reverselinks.com

6) Hosting Web Poll
Vizu Answer offers a pretty new way to monetize your blog's and website's traffic. The pays the publishers on a cost-per-thousand impression (CPM) basis for hosting targeted web poll. The money a blogger can earn from hosting poll is depending on the page views. The more page views, the higher the earning.

Speed Up Games

Games performance, especially for demanding 3D games, is very dependent on hardware, specifically the graphics card and also your processor and RAM memory. If you want to run the latest games at their highest quality settings, you will need to have powerful hardware.

However, there are things you can do to help your current PC run games better. First, make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card by visiting www.nvidia.com for Nvidia GeForce cards or http://ati.amd.com for ATI cards.

Most PC games include display options in their menu screens. You can often choose from a simple performance setting - for example: Low, Medium or High, or you can get more involved with advanced options. Some games let you tweak or switch off things like shadows and other special effects that can put a strain on your system.

Often, it is a case of experimenting to get a good balance between visual quality and performance. A common setting to tweak is the resolution: choosing a higher resolution will mean clearer, more detailed screens but can cost performance. You can only go up to the highest resolution that your monitor can support.

When playing games, you should make sure not to run other programs in the background, especially anti-virus software, as these can contribute to slowing down your game.

Define Worm Virus - Diagnosing Computer Problems

If your computer has been experiencing performance problems lately, you are likely wondering if your computer has been infected by a worm or a virus. Self-education is a great way to start when you are troubleshooting your computer. Once you understand what the possible causes of your performance problems are, you are that much better equipped to repair things and get on with your computing life.

Here is how to define a worm/virus:

1. Worms and viruses are not the same thing:

Worms and viruses are often discussed in the same breath. In fact, it is not uncommon for people to confuse the two types of computer problems. Make no mistake: while they are similar in many ways, worms and viruses are actually different. They behave differently and they infect your equipment differently.

2. A worm is a self-replicating program:

Let’s start with defining what a worm is. A worm is a self-replicating (makes copies of itself), self-propagating (moves itself forward) program which is designed to harm your computer and others on the network. Of course, self-replicating means that they actually make copies of themselves and send themselves through a network of unprotected computers. Worms can act on their own and do not need to be associated with any particular computer program.

3. A virus is also self-replicating, but it needs to be associated with a particular program:

Okay, now to define viruses. A virus is similar to a worm in that it is also usually self-replicating. The difference is that a virus needs to be attached to or associated with a particular software program or file in order to “live.” Unlike worms, viruses cannot spread on their own.

4. Worms almost always cause harm to the network:

Worms can wreak havoc on an entire network of computers at once. Because they are self-propagating and don’t need to be associated with a particular software program or file, they can just run freely. Worms often spread by finding security holes in networks. The safer your network, the safer you are from being infected by a worm.

5. Viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted computer:

Meanwhile, viruses tend to infiltrate the computer on which a person opened an infected file or ran an infected software program. Be careful about opening any unknown e-mail attachments, and never run a file on your computer ending in “.exe” unless you absolutely trust the source.

To define “worm/virus” is the first step toward determining if your computer is infected. You then need to make sure you are protecting your computer by installing the latest firewall and anti-virus, anti-worm software.

If you believe that your computer is infected, you should take immediate steps to remove the offending worm or virus. If you take the necessary steps but still experience computer performance problems, you should consider other possible causes, such as: a damaged registry, a failing hard drive, a hard drive that is out of free space, a fragmented hard drive, or the presence of spyware.

computer tips : Make XP Like Vista?

The now 6 years old Windows XP almost gets to its end. In 2008 Microsoft stops selling individual XP-licenses of it. After that the support will be reduced and at the end there will be no more updates available.

What kinds of consequences does this have for you, for how long can still you work with XP and what kinds of Windows development can you expect?

Microsoft will still bring out security updates for Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional for about 7 years from now on.

The next Service Pack (SP3) is announced for the first half of 2008. After that there will be maybe 1 or 2 more, but that’s it.

The normal life cycle of Windows is 10 years. 5 years mainstream support and 5 years extended support. The in 2001 launched XP will be provided with updates until 2014. That’s 14 years. This prolongation is thanks to SP2.

This Service Pack brought so many new functionalities, like a firewall, Internet Explorer with pop-up blocker and ‘no-execute’-technology. The optimization of XP got so many priority that the development of Vista was postponed.

What even more unusual is, is that Microsoft also maintains the Home version 13 years long. Normally systems for home usage can count on 5 year mainstream support. There is no 5 years extra support for these systems. Based on this strategy the Vista Home-versions (also Vista Ultimate) will no longer be maintained after 2012 so they will be ‘ended’ even earlier then XP Home!

Because the end of Windows XP is nearby we put together a ‘XP forever’-pack, which includes all the necessary systems expansions so you can still work with XP for a long time and you can make XP like Vista.

Because the two operating systems Windows XP and Windows Vista aren’t that different from each other technically, Vista is not safer then XP! The thing is that Vista handles security aspects a bit more flexible. The benefits of making XP like Vista is that, using the following tools, you can restore that balance and you can use XP for a much longer time.

So now we are going to make XP like Vista using the following tools. We even transform the XP look into the Vista look. Make Money Blogging

Do you want to make money blogging? If you do - you’re not alone. More and more bloggers are finding that blogging is a profitable medium. Whether it be to earn a few extra dollars a week to feed their coffee habit, or making enough money to stop them having to get a part time job to get through college, or whether they’ve got it to a point where they are able to make a full time living from their blogging - there are tens of thousands of bloggers making money from blogging.

In this page I want to share some information for beginners on making money from their blogs.

I will start by sharing my own top Money Making Methods (updated regularly) but below that point you to some great resources and teaching on how to increase your income from blogging.

How I Make Money BloggingWhat follows is a quick summary of my main income streams from blogging. Before you read it though - keep in mind that every blog is unique in how it can make money. Some of the following income streams will work on some blogs a lot better than others - the key is to experiment with as many as possible and see what works best for you.

The following income streams (from a number of blogs) have helped me to earn a six figure income each year for the last three years from blogging. I’ve ranked them from highest to lowest.

I hope you find it useful to see the mix and variety of ways that I earn a living from blogging.

1. AdSense

AdsenseDespite not using it here at ProBlogger any more (here’s why) I continue to use AdSense with amazing effect on my other blogs. I have them all set to show image and text based ads and find that 250×300 pixel ads work best (usually with a blended design). I don’t have much luck with their ‘referrals’ program but their normal ads work a treat and continue to be the biggest earner for me.

2. Chitika

ChitikaChitka continues to be a great performer for me on my blogs. They work best on product related blogs although their recent announcement of their Premium ad unit is exciting as they now offer ads with a non product focus that I’m hearing great conversions on (I have one reader who is getting $28 CPM on this ad unit).Chitika offers a range of ad units that I experiment with. I find their eMiniMalls work best and that Related Product Units are also good. Their Shoplincs product isn’t performing as well as it once did for me - mainly because I’ve been promoting it less and have driven less traffic to it. Over the time I’ve been using Chitika they’ve now earned me over a quarter of a million dollars - I can’t recommend them enough!

3. Private Ad Sales/Sponsorships

private-ad-salesPrivate ad sales directly to advertisers have continued to grow over the last few months and as a result they’re now my third highest income stream. I expect them to overtake both Chitika and AdSense in the coming months. This includes ad sales of the 125 x 125 ads here at ProBlogger as well as a campaign or two at Digital Photography School.

4. Amazon Associates

Amazon’s affiliate program has been one of my big movers in the last 12 months. I used to make a few odd dollars from it - however in recent times it has become a significant earner for me (as I’ve shared previously). This quarter it grew even more than previously as a result of continued growth of DPS where I recommend books, software and cameras.

5. Miscellaneous Affiliate Programs

miscellaneous affiliate programsI run a variety of affiliate programs on my blogs - most of which bring in smaller amounts of money that don’t really justify a category of their own. These include - - Digital Photography Secrets (a camera technique series), Pro Photo Secrets (a great photoshop product) , Yaro’s Blog Mastermind Mentoring Program (about to open the doors again), SEO Book (Aaron’s legendary resource) and the excellent Teaching Sells course (which just continues to grow in what it offers to it’s members in terms of content).

The great thing about many of these programs is that they are of such high quality that they sell themselves and I am being emailed from readers who sign up to them thanking me for the recommendation!

6. Shopzilla

shopzilla.jpgAs I wrote recently - Shopzilla has really impressed me with how it’s performed over the last few weeks. It’s actually doing well enough to debut in this list at #6. The ads are similar to Chitika but the click values have been higher for me to this point. They don’t offer quite as many options as Chitika does in terms of types of ads but for a new ad network there’s definitely promising signs. I’m looking forward to seeing how they continue to develop!

7. ProBlogger Job Boards

Jobboardheader The job boards here at ProBlogger continue to grow each month in the number of advertisements that are being bought. This enabled me to invest most of the money that they’d earned a while back into getting a new back end for the boards and to redesign them. It hit me today that the boards are now bringing in around $1000 a month in revenue which is pretty nice considering that they are so low maintenance to run. They also offer a service to readers and add value to the overall blog.

The only problem that I face with the job boards is that there are so many bloggers looking for work that the demand for jobs far exceeds the supply. On the good side of things is that advertisers are reporting getting amazing quality of applications.

8. WidgetBucks

WidgetBucks is similar to Chitika and Shopzilla in many respects and works well on product related sites. It does best on sites with US traffic (the reason I’ve not used it as much as I get a lot of international traffic) so if you have a product related site with a US audience it’d be a no brainer to try out WidgetBucks. I’m hoping they’ll continue to expand their offerings in terms of ad types and visitor location.

Disclaimer - WidgetBucks are an advertiser on ProBlogger

9. Miscellaneous Advertising Programs

miscellaneous ad networksI also play with a number of other ad networks. Some I run as tests to see if I should review them here - and some are just advertising that run in the background on some of my smaller blogs. These include ShoppingAds, Feedburner RSS ads, Vizu (a poll advertising system), Kontera and Bidvertiser. Together these don’t add up to major earnings for me - not because they are not good, but because I don’t use them heavily (a blog can only run so many ads on it).

I think that that covers most of it although it’s worth mentioning that last time I did this list I also included TextLinkAds which used to be every bloggers favorite way to make money blogging by selling text links. I’ve stopped using them due to Google cracking down on them (read more about this here) but it’s worth noting that many bloggers still use them successfully - I advise to proceed with caution. Disclaimer - TLA are an advertiser on ProBlogger

Useful Resources for Bloggers Wanting to Make Money Blogging

A lot has been written on the topic of making money online from blogs. There is a lot of wonderful information out there - but also a lot of hype and sometimes dangerous information.

Below are a number of articles that I’ve written exploring some of the different ways that bloggers make money.

Adware and Spyware Blocker

There is this one law school student whose thesis is about money laundering so oftentimes she would google the term to come up with a ready list of online references. This proved to be useful to her and the entire process of writing her paper. After several months of doing so, she was confronted with problems like being directed to a weird page totally not related to money laundering every time she types the same words. At first she thought it was just a glitch in the internet system and then she rationalized that no it maybe a glitch in the search engine she is using but the persistent occurrence of such a thing made her think that someone bugged her. We all hate bugging people us but people we can fend of. What this law student is confronted with is a computer bug that she cannot fend off. In the first place she is not a technology savvy person and in the second place she never uses her laptop for any other things than academic research and actual writing of her papers.

The situation above is not an isolated case. There are many people who find themselves caught up in technology problems that are mind boggling but actually can be answered with two words and those two words are spyware and adware. The infamous term of spyware was first coined in the year 1995 but it was popularized in the year 2000. Spyware is a computer software innocently infiltrated in a personal computer to be able to access personal information of the user.

This is done by studying logging keystrokes, web browsing history and even scanning a user’s hard drive. Sounds like something we see only in James Bond movies but apparently we are wrong for anyone can be a victim of spyware. It is safe to use the word victim because no one wants to be monitored of all their online activities. Spyware can understandably be used to spy on criminals because such use is beneficial to society but how about the use of spyware to intercept credit card details and the like. There is simply no excuse for the lax of the use of spyware.

What ordinary people can do to protect themselves is to block spyware and all other software programs similar to it like adware and malware. This can easily be done by availing adware and spyware blocker programs online. The role of these blocking programs include to remove or disable existing spyware programs or to avoid the installation of these malicious software programs.

Spyware, adware, malware are not like virus or worms that self replicate but they can be just as hassle as their counterparts for whoever wants to be disrupted of their normal personal computer activities. One of the more popular hassles cause by these infectious software programs is the slowness of the computer which can really be annoying because when you are at work you tend to want to finish things quick not just because you are required but also because you want more done or you want to be able to go home early.

In some infections, spyware is not even evident as the bad guy so it can get away with its crime. It is best then to have a ready blocker to at least do something for preventing any infection to occur in the first place.

SEO Techniques for Your Website

SEO, also known as search engine optimization, is to get your website to rank well on the natural listing of major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. SEO is a very time-consuming process, as you need to spend a lot of time and effort on establishing links with other webmasters.

This is why so many business owners decide to outsource their company optimization to a professional SEO firm. But if you are someone who love to do the technical stuffs, and have spare time to spend on it, you can try out some of the optimization techniques that I am going to share with you.

By applying the 5 essential SEO techniques below, you will be able to improve your ranking from your current position:

1. Title tag. This is the most important element to change. Put your most important keywords at the front. Every single page of your website should have its own title tag. If you want to optimize more keywords for your website, you should design a different set of keywords for each page, customized to the content of that particular page.

2. Meta Description. This is where you will insert a keyword-optimized description of your company. Do place your most important keywords at the front also when you are changing your Meta description.

3. Link popularity. This is one of the most important elements of a SEO campaign and it will take up most of your time. You need to get as many links pointing back to your website as possible. Most search engines do not even consider websites if there is not at least 2 to 3 links pointing back to them. If you want to rank well on search engines, especially on Google, you need to get as many backlinks as possible.

4. Keyword Density. You need to keep your overall keyword density between 5% to 20%. Place your keywords in your title and meta tag, header tag, bold tag, and at the start and end of the paragraph of a page.

5. Build more content. Search engines love websites which provide valuable content. You should build more pages and keep each of your pages around 200 to 500 words. Try to link each of your pages out to other related websites.

Search engine optimization is the foundation to drive more traffic to a website. It is a long term investment and anyone who is serious about succeeding on the Internet, the subject of SEO is definitely a must to learn and execute

computer tips : How to Find an Email Message Header in Outlook

If you’ve ever pondered a strange email address you’ve seen in your incoming mail, you’re not alone. There are many different ways to research email addresses including reverse email lookups. One great place to start is by learning everything you can from the strange email itself by examining the email headers. Email headers are a lot like the envelope of an email; they include information that tells email programs where the message came from and where to deliver it. However, reading email headers can be difficult, and sometimes even finding them can be hard, especially if you use a program like Outlook. Here is some basic information about how email headers work and how to find them using Outlook.

The first step to using email headers is to find them, which is simple and easy if you use the email program Outlook. There are different ways to access email headers, depending on which version of Outlook you use. If you use Outlook 4, 5, or 6 click on the File menu, then choose Properties. From the Properties menu, click on the Details Tab. Click the button that says Message Source, and you’ve found the email headers. You can also access this information by opening the message in its own window and pressing ctrl + F3. If you’re using Outlook 2007, just right-click on the message in your inbox and choose Message Options; this should show you the headers.

Some people may not be sure what an email header is, much less how to read it. This is understandable, as headers are meant to be read by computers, not people. This means that they are not particularly user friendly. However, there are a few important things you can learn from email headers without having to take a college class in SMTP protocol. The most important thing to look for is the lowest line that says “Received: from”. This line tells you where the message originated. Look for the approximately ten-digit number that closely follows these words. It should look something like this-123.456.78.90 . This number is the IP address, the unique Internet address of the computer the message originated on. While spammers and Internet savvy individuals might be able to disguise or change the name of the sender, it’s much harder to interfere with IP addresses in email Headers. This means that the IP address is traceable, and almost always leads back to the person who sent the message.

So, if you need to find and use email headers, now you have an idea how to get started, especially if you use Outlook. Another great way to research strange email addresses is to use a reverse email address lookup to determine the name and owner of an email address quickly and easily. If you are persistent, you’re sure to find the information you need.

Computer tips : 3 Top Tips to Keep Your Computer Working Longer

Technology is constantly improving, and new computers are getting faster and faster every day. This doesn’t meant that you need to buy a new computer. If your current computer is working as well as it can, then there is no reason why you need to buy a new computer.
The problem is that regular computer usage will cause your computer to slow down if you do not maintain it properly. Below you will find the three most common things that you can do to ensure that your computer is running as well as it can for as long as possible.

1. Make sure that you avoid computer clutter- Regularly using your computer means you will often be using new software. The problem is that most people do not delete old software as they get new software. Software clutter can slow down your computer. If you are no longer using software, you should delete this software from your computer.

2. Make sure that you avoid viruses or spyware- There are many evil people that try and fill your computer with viruses or spyware. Viruses are generally designed to ruin your computer. Spyware can be designed to hijack your computer for remote usage or to steal your personal information. You need to ensure that you regularly keep your antivirus software or antispyware software up to date to ensure that your computer is running as well as it possibly can.

3. Make sure that your Windows Registry is regularly scanned and cleaned- The Windows Registry stores data that ensures all your installed software and hardware runs as it should. However, if you delete files, sometimes you will find small packets of data are still kept in the Registry unnecessarily. A Windows Registry cleaner can ensure that any unnecessary data is removed. This means that you should be able to speed up your computer and avoid errors such as ‘the blue screen of death.’

Just because there are a new range of faster computers available in the shops, doesn’t mean that you need to buy a new computer. With regular maintenance, you should be able to keep your current computer running for much longer than you originally thought.

Google Adsense Earnings Biggest in the World!

googleAre your curious to know who some of the biggest Google Adsense earners are? I know that I was interested to know who the best are so I could check out their websites and see how I could possibly earn as much money as these people do. I realized from most of these sites that sites with user generated content usually ranked pretty highly for Google Adsense earners. It seems that these “community” type sites do tend to get a lot of traffic and we all know that traffic = money. So without any more delay here are a list of the top 8 Google Adsense earners as collected from online resources.

1. Markus Frind - PlentyOfFish.com - $300,000 per month

If you haven’t heard of this guy yet you should check out the website plentyoffish.com. He is the person who created this free online dating website from his appartment all by himself. His website soon become one of the largest dating websites online. I have actually tried out his website myself and can see how it can be interesting and attract a lot of visitors. The graphics and layout of the website is nothing fancy at all but the functionality is all there and its fast to use.

There have been many of doubts that he wasn’t making that much money so he made those people silent by posting this on his blog. According to his blog this represented two months worth of Adsense earnings.

2. Kevin Rose - Digg.com - $250,000 per month

Kevin Rose started Digg.com in December 2004. It is a social marketing site that is mostly news, video, and pictures that are submitted by users for other users to read about and view. Basically what happens is you can signup for an account and you can submit a “news story” and other people can view it and if they like it they can “Digg it” and this boosts the rating of the post. If it gets enough Diggs it will appear on the Frontpage of the site and will get tons of traffic. Digg has both Google Adsense ads and Federated Media ads. It is estimated that he earns roughly $250k a month from Adsense alone.

Laptop Screen Cleaning Tips

Every laptop that is put through good use will need to have the screen cleaned frequently. Over time, your laptop screen will accumulate dust, fingerprint smudges and grime from many different daily situations. A dirty laptop screen can impede the usability of your laptop and can also just be annoying.

Keeping your laptop screen clean is pretty easy. Here are a few tips to make cleaning the screen an easy task and to keep from damaging the screen on your laptop during the process of cleaning.

*Use a Cotton Cloth

The type of cloth that you use to clean your laptop screen is very important. It is best to use a cloth that doesn’t contain any filaments that can scratch a laptop screen. 100% cotton is the best choice. An example of a 100% cotton cloth would be a piece of an old t-shirt or a sock, be sure to check the tags to make sure it is cotton.

Do not use any cloth that contains polyester, as the filaments in polyester can scratch a laptop screen. Paper towel and facial tissue are also bad options for a cleaning cloth. They can contain small fibers (or even lotions and other junk) that can either scratch your screen or make cleaning tough.

*Don’t Press Hard

Do not press overly hard on your screen when you are cleaning it with a 100% cotton cloth. Pressing too hard on an LCD screen can promote scratching and other physical damage of the screen.

*Use Safe Cleaning Liquids

The most safe cleaning liquid to use on a laptop screen is isopropyl alcohol which contains 90-100% pure alcohol, with the remaining part de-ionized water. Mix one part alcohol and one part distilled water to make a cleaning mixture. This cleaning solution is cheap and will be effective at cleaning smudges and dust. This particular solution is great for any type of electronic device because it will evaporate quickly and will not leave a residue.

Never use cleaning products that contain ammonia on your laptop screen. Ammonia can have negative effects on the surface of your screen. Never use tap water either. Tap water can contain minerals that will have a negative effect on the surface of your laptop screen as well, and can also leave smudges.

*Never Spray Cleaning Solutions on the Screen

Spray the isopropyl alcohol and distilled water solution on a cotton cloth to dampen it, then use the cloth to wipe the screen lightly. Do not spray the solution directly on your screen. You might run the risk of water or moisture working its way into other parts of your laptop computer.

*Try to Keep Your Screen Clean

The best cleaning tip for any laptop screen is to care for your laptop in a way that prevents you from needing to clean it often. Try not to use your laptop in an overly dusty or dirty environment. Try not to touch your laptop screen. Turn your head when you sneeze. Don’t eat food excessively near your laptop.

If you can keep your screen clean, you won’t need to involve yourself with the risks of scratching and damaging your laptop screen when trying to clean it.

computer tips : Internet Addresses

Looking for a company's Web site but not sure where to start? You can, of course, use a search engine to track it down. But here's a much quicker technique that often pays off: simply use the company's name.
For instance, if you want to locate drivers for your Hewlett-Packard printer, type www.hewlett-packard.com or www.hp.com (hp is a common abbreviation for Hewlett-Packard) into your browser's address box and see if you make a match. Chances are, you will. You can also tack "au" onto the end of the address if you want to see if there's an Australian site for the company; the suffix "ca" will turn up Canadian companies; and so on. One pitfall: Many UK-based companies use the suffix co.uk instead of the expected com.uk. For example, to visit the online version of the British newspaper The Times, type www.thetimes.co.uk.

(By the way, all three of the addresses for Hewlett-Packard – www.hewlett-packard.com, www.hp.com and www.hp.com.au – work. Companies often have multiple addresses which point to the same site (or to subsidiaries), to ensure customers can find them easily.)
Smart addresses
Browsers have been getting progressively more intelligent about Web addresses. It used to be that you had to type the full address, including http:// at the beginning. Then they did away with the need for the http:// and you could get what you wanted without it.
Recent generations of browsers go one step further: you don't even need the www prefix and com suffix. For any Web address that takes the form www.sitename.com, all you need to do is type sitename in the address box and hit Ctrl-Enter. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for addresses ending in .com.au or .co.uk, for example. Nor will it work when you're looking for an FTP site or other non-Web Internet address. Then you'll have to provide the full address. The one exception is if you use Crazy Browser, a free browser which includes among its many attractive features the ability to customise the browser so it automatically adds non-.com suffixes such as .co.uk.
Auto-complete
Save yourself typing and let your browser do the work: both Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer feature auto-completion of addresses. Each browser stores a list of recently visited Web sites. When you start to type an address, the browser will attempt to auto-complete the full address for you by looking up matching entries from sites you've visited in the past. If the auto-completed entry is incorrect, simply keep typing.
What's my IP?
Sometimes online you need to know your IP address. This is the address which identifies your computer on the Internet, and it's how information you request gets sent to you correctly, instead of ending up on someone else's computer. If you play online games with others and in some other circumstances, you'll need your IP address to create a direct connection between you and another Internet user. As your IP is usually dynamically assigned – that is, you get a different IP each time you connect to the Internet – how do you know what yours is?
It's easy to find out:
Click Start -> Run.
In the Run dialog box, type winipcfg and click OK.
A dialog box will be displayed, containing your IP address as well as other information.
Note: Microsoft doesn't include the Windows IP Configuration (winipcfg) tool with Windows 2000 or Windows XP. However, you can download a version for those operating systems directly from Microsoft. It has a slightly different name (wntipcfg), so once you've installed it, to run it do this:
Click Start -> Run.
In the Run dialog box, type wntipcfg and click OK !!

Internet Tips and Secrets

Getting on the internet is the most important thing that you will ever do. I cannot overstate this point. Get on the internet - now. Your livelihood, your happiness and your future is at stake. Staying away from the internet is the social equivalent of committing suicide.
What is so great about the internet? Put simply, it's communication. The internet gives everyone on this planet the capability of communicating with anyone else (assuming they are on the internet also) at any time about anything that they want.
Perhaps the most basic human characteristic is communication. Humans are always chattering about something, whether it be written, spoken, drawn, painted, hand-signaled or coded in electronic waves. We have a basic, fundamental need to talk to someone, anyone. And when we're not talking, we want to be listening.
Just as important, the internet allows, uniquely in history, the ability to communicate virtually instantly and almost completely uncensored. Never before (and probably never again, if some people have their way) have you had the opportunity for open communications that you have now.

Take advantage of the internet like you've never taken advantage of anything before in your life. There are more opportunities here than you can imagine. There is money to be made, friends to be found, product to purchase and places to explore. Quite literally, there is something for everyone.
There is danger also, but if you are careful you will be fine. Load up your virus checking, install a firewall, watch out for scams, and protect your children and you should be fine.
So what are you waiting for? Get going, make a fortune and have fun. And email me with your success stories ... I'd love to know the cool things you've done on the web.
Sometimes people seem to make a choice between making their site pretty for search engines or making it useful for people. I am always fascinated when I hear this discussion. In fact, it is interesting to hear someone say "I'm removing my Webring because will get annoyed" or "I'm deleting my links page because god, uh, won't like it", or "search engines don't use meta tags, so I took them all out". These comments all ignore the basic datum about the internet. It's about PEOPLE! The internet is not about some silly, stupid little robots, or some faceless idiotic rules enforced by their creators. The internet is about communication.
Yes, search engines are a part of that communication, as it is one (and only ONE) want of getting people to your site. But there are an infinite number of other ways to get people to your site, from viral marketing to Webrings to link exchanges to contests to newsgroups to whatever else you can think of.
But if your site does not cater to PEOPLE, it will fail. Period.
Yes, it's a good idea to make sure your site is known to the engines and known well. But that is NOT the purpose of the site. The purpose of the site is to communicate. Pure and simple.
-- Webmaster, Internet Tips And Secrets
Google's customers are advertisers; the searchers are the commodity that's being sold to the advertisers. The search engine is the bait used to get the commodity to view the advertisements. SEO types tend to reduce the value of the bait, which in turn lowers the value of the commodity, which in turn makes the advertisers (the customers) more likely to look elsewhere.

Blog tips: Why Your Blog Should Do Community Service Work

For most of us, our blogs are a place to share our passions, engage with new people, and hopefully make a little money. I want to share with you why I think it’s also important for every blogger to occasionally use their blog to help support a charitable cause. Giving through your blog is not only emotionally rewarding, but it also makes good business sense.
You Are An Influencer
Even if your blog has a very small following, your readers come to you because they enjoy your “voice” and trust what you have to say. That’s no secret to PR professionals, many of whom seem desperate to get us to write about their product or service. But why use your voice and the platform you have built up exclusively to help promote someone else’s business? Posting about a relevant charity or cause you care about is an easy and effective way to lend your support without writing a big check or giving up much of your time.

Be creative, and make sure that what you write about is relevant to your audience. For example, on my travel blog I posted pictures of pre-cyclone Myanmar in an effort to help readers understand the country better and hopefully donate money to support rescue and recovery efforts. Sharing my personal experience and my viewpoint helped my readers better connect with the disaster in Myanmar, and was an effective way to help increase donations.

Real World Results are Rewarding
As bloggers many of the ways we measure our success are esoteric: bounce rates, page views and comments per post have little meaning in the real world. It can be incredibly rewarding to do something that has a measurable real world impact, whether it is fundraising, a toy drive, or hearing from readers that your words motivated them to volunteer.

A Great Way To Build Relationships
Blogging can sometimes be isolating, and it is incredibly satisfying to work together with other bloggers to promote a common cause. Working together is also a great way to build relationships, and to establish yourself as a leader in your niche. As bloggers, we spend a lot of time asking other bloggers to link to us, stumble our posts, and promote us using other social media tools. Sending email on behalf of a charity or cause that really needs it instead of for yourself is a way to connect without being self-promoting.

As a case in point, this winter three other leading travel bloggers (Pam Mandel, Beth Whitman and Michelle Duffy) and I have organized PassportsWithPurpose, a fundraiser for Heifer International. The effort has built bonds between us that will last throughout the year, and I have grown to know more about each blogger, their strengths, and their backgrounds through the effort. The goodwill does not stop there, though. I was amazed and touched at how quickly over 50 other travel bloggers were able to round up prizes for the raffle, each one developing a relationship with a sponsor in order to make it happen. The outpouring of support from those 50 bloggers and countless others in promoting the effort has been truly heartwarming. I expect that the relationships and goodwill forged during this time will last through the year and payoff in countless other ways for each of the participants. We will also raise thousands of dollars to give people on the edge of starvation the means to feed and support themselves.

Connect With Your Readers
We all become one-sided on our blogs, focusing on a particular aspect of our personalities, and often a single passion. For me, blogging about family travel is rewarding, but sometimes feels superficial. Each time I’ve taken time on my blog to advance a (related) cause that I am passionate about, I’ve noticed that every measure of “reader engagement” has gone up. From comments, to subscriber-ship, to tweets and inbound links, my readers do more for me when I express my passion for giving. I think readers enjoy the opportunity to see us as fuller human beings, beyond just the one interest that we’ve chosen to reveal on our blogs.

Connect With Sponsors
Online Advertising is tricky for potential sponsors because it is hard to identify which blogs can drive real world results (like purchases) based solely on traffic numbers. Having a concrete measure of success (for example raising money for charity) can help build your credibility with a potential sponsor.

Computer Tips: protect your wireless network

Having a Wireless networks are a great way to share files, printers, and your Internet connection to any computer in your home. With the use of wireless network adapter installed on your portable computer, you are no longer tied to your desk and have the mobility to use your computer anywhere. You can communicate with friends, read the news, and surf the Web anywhere you can receive a wireless network signal. See steps on How Setup Your Home Wireless Network.
But there are some risks. Since Wireless networks don't stop at the walls of your home. Yes, In fact, it often extend more than 300 feet from your wireless router considering some of new technologies nowadays. If you are living in an apartment, dorm, or condominium, you may have dozens of neighbors who can access your wireless network. If you live in a house, your neighbors and even people on the street or the house accross the street can may be able to connect to your network.

Here are the common implications why you should consider reading this article on "Computer Tips: How to protect your wireless network"

1. Slowdown your Internet performance. Imagine you are just checking a website and and the other one on the network is downloading movies and other stuffs. It divides your bandwidth or in simple terms your internet connection speed. A website that would load in instant will we loading for 30 secons or more. Thats not good, right? Not to consider when you are opening more than one webpages.

2. Others can Share and access computers and spread dangerous software. Since other can access your network it is also possible that they can also access your shared files and could infect your computer also with virus and spywares. Other can also Monitor the Web sites you visit, read your e-mail and instant messages as they travel across the network, and copy your usernames and passwords. Send spam or perform illegal activities with your Internet connection.

How to protect your wireless network

Protecting your Network is like protecting your self from theft and other outside threats. You can protect your wireless network by using the same method banks use to protect your password when you log on to their Web sites: encryption. Yes, Encryption scrambles data on your wireless network so that only computers that have the encryption key can read your communications.

Here are some wireless encryption:

64-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Protection). This is the original wireless encryption standard, it is now outdated. The main problem with it is that it can be easily "cracked." Cracking a wireless network means defeating the encryption so that you can establish a connection without being invited.

128-bit WEP. An updated, more secure version of the original WEP. However, skilled attackers can still crack 128-bit WEP in a few hours or less, giving them access to your network.

WPA-PSK (also known as WPA-Personal). A more secure alternative to WEP, but because it is newer, it is not as widely supported. Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 supports WPA, so this type of encryption is the best choice if you plan to connect only Windows XP computers to your wireless network. However, if you have wireless devices that don't support WPA, such as media extenders or wireless cameras, you'll have to use WEP on your network instead.

You might also see the security method called "WPA-Enterprise." As the name suggests, this method of network encryption is designed for business use. Setup for WPA-Enterprise is more complex than for other types of encryption, and it requires special network infrastructure.

WPA2. The newest type of wireless encryption, WPA2 provides the highest level of encryption available. WPA2 encryption should be your first choice if your wireless router and all of your wireless computers and devices support it.

Even though one type of encryption may be better than another, any type will dramatically improve your network's security by making you a more difficult target.

Can wireless encryption be "cracked"?

The short answer is, "Yes". Any encryption can be cracked. An individual with knowledge of computers and networking, and who is willing to spend a few hours researching free "hacking" tools, can crack encryption in a few hours (or less). However, most users who want to connect without authorization lack the expertise to crack wireless encryption, even relatively weak 64-bit WEP. In a crowded neighborhood with numerous unprotected networks, anyone looking for a free connection will likely choose the unprotected network rather than spend the time to crack your wireless encryption. Therefore, even WEP encryption offers better protection than not having encryption enabled at all.

Wireless security tips

Here are some tips to keep your data safe when using wireless networks:

1. If you use WEP encryption, change your encryption key once a month. If someone manages to learn your key, they will be locked out again when you change it.

2. Don't connect to unprotected wireless networks—it's possible for someone to monitor your Internet usage and even record your passwords.

3. If you do connect to an unprotected wireless network, don't visit a Web site that requires a password unless the Web site is encrypted. To find out if it's encrypted, look for a lock symbol in the lower-right corner of your browser.

4. SSL secured Web site icon

5. If you use WPA-PSK to encrypt your network, set a long passphrase of at least 20 random characters. Better yet, use the full 63 characters by typing a sentence you can remember—just don't make it something that's easily guessed, like a line from a movie.
